Of the many pleasurable travel moments I found amid my August 2022 journey through Norway, I got a curious thrill out of the afternoon I spent dozing in this hammock, alongside a forest-fringed lake not far from Sørumsand.
Over the years I’ve come to believe that the multifarious sights and activities a new place offers can’t be properly appreciated unless one also takes a moment from time to time to slow down and relax in that place (and in fact one of the mini-chapters in the later pages of my new book, The Vagabond’s Way, is entitled, “Rest Days are Key to the Long-Term Travel Experience”).
Indeed, this idle afternoon on the shores of that lake didn’t just allow me to linger for a while in the gorgeous wilderness of Norway, it allowed me to savor the act of stillness – to absorb and process my previous days’ journey through the country, and to anticipate the parts of Norway (and the Faroe Islands) that still awaited me.
