During a two-month sojourn in New Orleans, Rolf got the rare chance to visit the historic and exclusive Boston Club on Canal Street.

Friends and vagabonders,

After my return from Brazil in 2004, I've spent a good portion of the past year splitting time between Baja and USA locations such as San Diego, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Wichita, and New Orleans. This July I will travel to France, where I'll be the summer writer-in-residence at the Paris American Academy. After that, I will return to Latin America to resume work on my second book.

Recent stories of mine that appeared in print and online include The Other Patagonia, a Chile piece that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine; Signs of Confusion, a meditation on mistranslated English that appeared in World Hum; and "Bright Lights, Big River", a Mississippi River tale that appeared in Lexus.

In book news, my Vietnam essay "Circuit Broken" appears in The Best Travelers' Tales 2005 anthology, and a section of my travel writing advice appears in Don George's Travel Writing, which was published by Lonely Planet in March. For more news on this, go to my Books page.

The Travel Writers portion of my website has featured a number of writers in recent months, including Tom Miller, Wendy Knight, Michael Shapiro, Jen Leo, and Sarah Erdman. 2005 promises interviews and insights from Don George, Rory MacLean, Cleo Paskal, Mark Jenkins, Peter Moore, C.M. Mayo and Taras Grescoe, among others.

For those interested in studying creative writing in beautiful environs of Paris this summer, I will be teaching a Fiction and Creative Nonfiction course at the Paris American Academy from the 2nd through the 28th of July. Other courses offered include Screenwriting, Short Form, Journal Writing, and Performance. This promises to be an exciting, hands-on workshop environment — and those interested in enrolling can check out my Paris Workshop page here.

Cheers — and happy vagabonding,
