What could be stranger than an annual Coney Island-style carnival on the grounds on a Buddhist temple in the middle of Burma? Well, when the first night's pwe (Burmese theater) performance is a Vegas-style tranvestite lip-synch cabaret show. And don't write it off as Westernized decadence — I was the only non-native in an audience that consisted largely of monks!
